As an eternal classic of late Qing dynasty novels, Nie Hai Hua was launched by Jin Songceng, then Zeng Pu made some supplements to it which made the novel include 35 chapters at last. In other words, Nie Hai Hua was the fruit of painstaking efforts of his whole lifetime. This paper argues that Nie Hai Hua has multiple meanings. Firstly, it is not only a condemning novel, but also a satirical one with sophisticated literary grace and ingenious structure. Secondly, the history records of late Qing dynasty in Nie Hai Hua shows different characteristics with the traditional historical novels. Both the main historical events and the ideological changes in society can be found in this novel. Thirdly, Nie Hai Hua memorizes the association between famous literatis and prostitutes, and exhibits many characteristics of Xiaxie Novels. The novel creates Fu Caiyun, a prostitute who circulated among the complicated society and formed a complex and unique character. In addition, Jin Wenqing who represented the traditional literatis in the rapidly changing social trends still indulged in the traditional way of life and can't extricate himself. These high officials and famous literatis were engulfed by the history torrent at last. Nie Hai Hua reflects their tragic destiny completely and profoundly.
