As a distinctive cultural phenomenon of Western civilization, Western music differs essentially from music phenomena nurtured under the wing of other civilizations in universal significance and value, and its logo is "rationality". In a broad sense, rationality integrates logic normativity and freedom transcendence. Unity of oppositeness of the two confers the significance of "people" upon the world order, unifies human of rationality and world existence, and gives people thinking ability while facing the object world; this kind of thinking and consciousness can go beyond the perceptual material world to rise to a higher, more universal and transcendental spiritual world. The rationality of Western music also includes such two aspects as logic normativity and freedom transcendence. Logic normativity is embodied in the practice of musicians who express feeling by music through special process, composition and study on theory of music, determine the feelings by specific and logic normative means to express them by music and gain understanding for them; freedom transcendence is composers' transforming of their own philosophical perception of the outer world into internal and transcendental spiritual reflection through rational thinking of emotion. In Romantic music, romantic factor really occupies a primary position; passion, mystery, fantasticality, thirsting for ravishment and abundance in fantasy are all the characteristics of music style at the time. But at the same time, Romantic music is but a stage of historical development of Western music, after all; therefore, it is bound to bear the stigma of the core feature of Western music, that is, rational factor plays a penetrating and lineage role in Romantic music. Based on the rational thinking of several musicians in Romantic music and the rational spirits of their music works, this paper shows the characteristics of rational factors in music of this period.
