Huangfu Mei is one of important novelists in the middle of late Tang Dynasty and the Five Dynasties, the legend novel collection of Sanshui Xiao Du he wrote is called "Tang legend flower", which showed the transitional characteristics between the Tang Dynasty and Song Dynasty novels. There is a cognitive process in the academic circles about Huangfu Mei and the status and value of Sanshui Xiao Du. People begin paying more attention to Huangfu Mei and gradually think highly to Sanshui Xiao Du. But there still are many problems to be solved in the researches, for axample, we just know little about Huangfu Mei's personal situation including family, life and thought because of the limitation of materials, all the circulated versions of Sanshui Xiao Du failed to find the fundamental crux, the art analysis is scattered and trivial, etc. This paper attempts to explore the writer and the works with narrative theories and historical background to understand them more accurately, thoroughly and systematically.There are four chapters in my paper. The first chapter focuses on making textual criticism about the writer and the works. The first quarter confirms that Huangfu Mei's father is Huangfu Wei according to the unearthed epitaphs literature and determines that Hunagfu Mei's native is Henan country, Henan Fu through combing his family pedigree. The second quarter infers that Huangfu Mei was born in Da Zhong tenth year or the eleventh year and we find that the influence from the history of Zuo Zhuan is fundamental through comparing the influnces on his thought from Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism. The third quarter is about the circulated versions of Sanshui Xiao Du. We find that the two-volume version hidden in Yang Yi's house in Ming Dynasty was the source of modern popular two-volume versions and it was not the original book but a heterozygous version based on Taiping Guangji, Xutan Zhu and the reweaved Shuo Fu, ect.The second chapter divides the works into four categories according to its subject and content:Legend vision, Divine spirits, Shall recompense and Geographical notes. The first quarter finds that the style between the early part and late part of the works changed from romance to reality and then explains the reason of the changing. The second and third quarters discuss the uniqueness of subjects about divine spirits and shall recompense from which we can see the influence of Zuo Zhuan. The forth quarter analysez the features of the content about geographical notes according to the times background.The third chapter analysez the artistic value of the works with western narration principle. The first quarter talks about the narrator intervention which appears often in the works. The second quarter distinguishes the narrative structureas in the works as plot novels, figure novels and drama novels.and expounds their structural characters. The third quarter talks about the exquisite narrative technical of Huangf Mei on time through the analysis of time sequence, time length and time frequency.The forth chapter does specific research about the portraits in the works and distinguishes the figures as scribes, soldiers, maid and rabbles and then analysez their behavior patterns.The appendix mainly includes reweaving and proofreading of the works of Sanshui Xiao Du, all the sages and the unearthed epitaphs of the HuangFu family. |
