The Disposition of Troops of Cao Mo is one of the ancient books of bamboo slips of Chu stored in Shanghai Museum. It is a book rich in content and time-honoured. And it is important historical material recording the biography of Cao Mo and reflecting the political and military thinking of Lu which existed in the early Spring and Autumn Period. In accordance with the research methods of ancient Chinese history, by using such methods as empirical and logic analysis methods and by combining The Disposition of Troops of Cao Mo with historical documents handed down, we know that this book of bamboo slips was completed in the early Warring States Period and its content is true and reliable. Furthermore, we are able to determine the nature of the change in Cao Mo's historical images, his deeds and ideological system. The events recorded in The Disposition of Troops of Cao Mo are supposed to be happened during the 10th and 11th year of Lu Zhuanggong, between the Changshao Battle and the Alliance of Ke, filling the blanks of the deeds of Cao Mo. Other handed-down historical materials never recorded the large battles between Lu and Qi before the Alliance of Ke, which causing Lu's loss of large tracts of land. But in The Disposition of Troops of Cao Mo, it recorded that after the Changshao Battle, Cao Mo and Lu Zhuanggong once prepared for war regarding Qi as their hypothetical enemy. And this provides proof for the war between Lu and Qi. With the changes of values, people's impressions of Cao Mo shift from militarist to brave general or warrior and to assassin. Cao Mo was born a lower nobility of Lu. He is conservative in politics but had made many breakthroughs in military. There are many factors relating to the formation of Cao Mo's ideas, including the change of the social environment in the Spring and Autumn Period, the unrest of the upper classes of Lu and the personnel appointments and education of Lu.
