This paper mainly talks about the reference of nouns which represents concrete, discrete, three-dimensional things in the world. The theoretical framework of this paper are cognitive and functionalism, clausal pivot. One of parts talks about the following three theoretical issues.1.The referential meaning of these nouns is a meaning that a word can only have when it is in its using. The meaning actually reflects the relationship between a word and the object that the word represents in the world.2.The ways of reference include entity referential and non-entity referential, generic and individual, identifiable and nonidentifiable.3.The last theoretical discusion is about the two classification systems of reference. One is for the proper noun. And the other is for common noun. The other part discusses three practical problems.1.If there is no referential meaning of the N a monosyllabic structure in the Structure "V a monosyllabic structure+N a monosyllabic structure",We can conclude that the structure "V a monosyllabic structure+N a monosyllabic structure" is a word.On the contrary, if the N a monosyllabic structure has a referential meaning, the structure "V a monosyllabic structure+N a monosyllabic structure" is a language unit that is greater than the language of the word units. 2.The attribute of the object itself is the potential driving force which leads to the functional shift of the related words. In the process of language communication, the word's functional shift whether will occur depends on the conceptualization of the object itself and the communication needs. In essence, it is their conceptualization of the object determines the syntactic function of the words.3.The valence of Chinese noun denominates the semantic-based noun valence so far has not fully concerned the complicated referential situation administered by their syntactic combination. The paper advances that the referential meaning of noun affects the noun valence in Chinese. Semantic-based valent noun can only be identified when they are in sentences.
