The Roman Army, And Cultural Integration

This thesis is a study of the Roman army in the Late Republic and the early Roman empire. It mainly discusses the cultural intercourse and the cultural integration in the Roman army, explores the infulence of those phenomena in the history of Roman civilization. There are three chapters, the first chapter introduces the background of Rome in the Late Republic. It is an important era which the professional Roman army and the Principate system were coming into existence. The second chapter explores the daily life of the Roman soldiers in the early Roman empire, focusing on the phenomena of cultural intercourse and cultural integration, discusses some cultural characters of Roman civilization as well as the tolerance of foreign culture in Roman army. The third chapter explores the infulence of the cultural intercourse and the cultural integration in the history of Roman army and Roman civilization. It combines with phenomena mentioned above and demonstrates that the Roman army is a media of cultural intercourse and cultural integration in the Mediterranean area.Because of the cultural intercourse and the cultural integration of the Mediterranean area, the Romans could make such a magnificent achievement. So, the Roman army played an important role in the development of the Roman civilization.
