Zuo Zong-tang was a vital and very complicated person in modem history of China. For ten decades, people have done some researches on his careers, thoughts, status and functions in history and achieved many valuable fruits, but not systematically picking out the modern factors in his thoughts. In my view, the modern factors of his thoughts was not reflected separately, but contained his thoughts of diplomacy, economics, military, culture and education. As to the diplomacy issuers, he stressed seeking survival in the developing strengths and making efforts to protect national dignity and interests with strong power. As to the westernization movement (1865-1894), he did his best to develop capitalist economy of industry and commerce getting rid of the physiocracy, emphasized the coordinated development of them, and maintain the sustainable development of agriculture and ecology environment. As to the establishment of modern navy, he stressed the rising of Qing army's power and weapon equipment and advocated the independence in the specific work. Facing the trend of western learning to the east, he advocated combining learning the west and china's basic condition and sending students going abroad to develop China modern education. In brief, his thoughts of modernizations played a promoting role at that time and we can get benefit historical enlightenments and draw lessons from studying the modern factors of his thoughts.
