Examine Through The Courtesy Point Of View, To Refute The Speech Acts

This thesis bases on the data about actor's lines (total 176 cases) in Japanese TV drama programs. When it meets the following conditions, a speech act can be defined as rebuttal speech act. The first one is the rule of propositional content, that is, the speaker holds opposite proposition to the hearer. The second one is the rule of predetermination, which means that the speaker has enough confidence on his proposition to refute the counterpart and the hearer has the ability to refute his counterpart. The third one is the rule of sincerity. The speaker considers his proposition correct and beneficial to both him and the hearer. The fourth one is the rule of quality, which is to make the hearer agree to the opinions and admit its justification. On this basis, the thesis mainly studies rebuttal speech act from the perspective of politeness theory.The analysis results show that when rebutting the speaker has two kinds of directionality. On one hand, the speaker's proposition has to be conveyed to the other part correctly and effectively. On the other hand, the speaker has to pay attention to the expression of the speech. The thesis will analyze the executing ways of rebuttal speech act and the specific expressing strategies of the executing ways, priority of self-proposition and misgiving of interpersonal relationship. Finally, from the analysis of politeness theory, the thesis will make clear the means of reducing face threatening acts.The thesis is composed of four parts:The first part introduces previous studies on politeness theory and rebuttal speech act and states clearly the point of view of the thesis.The second part studies rebuttal speech act on the basis of the materials about actor's lines in Japanese TV drama programs. It mainly analyzes the executing ways of rebuttal speech act and the specific expressing strategies of the executing ways, priority of self-proposition and misgiving of interpersonal relationship.The third part studies rebuttal speech act from the perspective of politeness theory. It states the necessity of the study in the first place and then evaluates the degree of face threatening in rebuttal speech act, and finally points out the effective ways of reducing face threatening and explores the method of application of politeness when rebutting.The fourth part is the conclusion of the thesis. It indicates that when rebutting the speaker shall pay attention to the interpersonal relationship and convey the proposition effectively by means of politeness.
