Arthur Schnitzler is an Austria writer from late 19th century to early 20th century. He used the writing technique "inner monologue" for the first time in German speaking countries in "Lieuntenant Gustl" und "Fr(a|¨)ulein Else".Chapter one of my thesis introduces the historical background in Vienna at the end of the end of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.Chapter two of my thesis explains the mental abnormality of the people in Vienna from late 19th century to early 20th century from three aspects:the two protagonists have incompleteness in their personalities; they have no identity of themselves and there is no soul hometown for them.Through the details in both stories the author expresses his criticism on the society and its value system.Chapter three of my thesis elaborates the structure of those two stories. The change of time and location is introduced. And this change has influence on the change of the inner world of the figures.Besides, the thesis makes a comparison between Gustl and Else. After that the similarities and difference between those protagonists are discussed. Finally the characteristics of the language and style of the two books are analyzed.Through describing the mental abnormality of the people from an intrinsic angle Arthur Schnitzler exposed the abnormality of the society at that time.
