Taking specific state of acceptance of Lee's movies in eastern and western audience as starting point and using acceptance aesthetics for reference, this paper tried to interpret Lee's movies from the view point of receiver (audience).Through various acceptance presentations among eastern and western audience, the paper also explained intensively the deep film-watching mentalities behind them and searched internal reasons shaded by different acceptance dimensions. This research will show illuminating significations for the composition centered on eastern and western audience and the construction of Chinese movies'world culture character. This article consists of five parts, they were expatiated as following: Chapter one is mainly about listing the research status of Lee's movies. It was pointed out that the focus of research on Lee's movies was mostly on culture interpretation and diverse explanation. Intensive research on Lee's films from the view point of eastern and western audience still did't attract enough attention of researchers. Meanwhile, on this basis a survey was made of the state of acceptance of Lee's films among western audience.Chapter two is particularly about eastern and western audience's common acceptance of Lee'movies . Common acceptance refers to Lee's movies,"Father Knows Best"Trilogy,"Sense and Sensibility"and"Brokeback Mountain"gained unanimous acceptance and recognization of eastern and western audience. By analyzing common acceptance state of eastern and western audience for the five films mentioned above, the common feelings of eastern and western audience for"family"and"love",and the viewer-friendly structure of linear narrative catering to the prevalent film-watching psychology of eastern and western audience were explained in depth, the effective combination of which paved the consistent path for touching eastern and western audience and giving them acceptance resonance.Chapter three is particularly about interpretation on reverse acceptance(â… ) for Lee's movies among eastern and western audience. Reverse acceptance(â… ) means the sharp contrast of acceptance state between eastern and western audience for"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon". Based on the former analysis of reverse acceptance of eastern and western audiences for"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", it was pointed out that the exterior reason for reverse acceptance was different expectations arising from totally different film-watching experience of eastern and western audience on martial arts movies. The"Orientalism"view of western audience and anxiety of eastern audience about the fate of ethical movies amid the wave of globalization were the interior reasons of this acceptance state. Chapter four is particularly about interpretation on reverse acceptance(â…¡) for Lee's movies of eastern and western audience. Reverse acceptance(â…¡) means the embrace of eastern audience compared with the resistance of western audience for"Lust, Caution". Based on analysis of reverse acceptance of eastern and western audiences for"Lust, Caution", it was pointed out that the estrangement of western audience on the cultural background revealed in"Lust, Caution"was the main reason for the resistance. Erotic scenes in"Lust, Caution"triggered watching upsurges among Chinese audience, and the diversification of value notions in mental areas in present China were the leading reasons for Chinese audience's argument on"Lust, Caution".Chapter five is focused on the interpretation of the poor acceptance of Ang Lee's films among eastern and western audience. Three of Lee's movies,"Ice Storm","Ride with the Devil", and"Hulk", didn't get wide acceptance among western audience, hence comes the name poor acceptance. By analyzing the poor acceptance state of eastern and western audience for the above three movies, it could be concluded that the main reason why western audience didn't embrace"Ice Storm"and"Ride with the Devil"was that both films were involved with less popular subjects. In addition, obscure stories lead to the failure of acceptance of"Ride with the Devil". Meanwhile,"Ice Storm"and"Ride with the Devil"were not welcomed by Chinese audience, because the historical and cultural knowledge of specific period depicted in the two films were relatively strange to them. At the same time, under the present high-tech conditions,"Hulk"didn't satisfy audience's real expectations for sci-fi blockbusters, which explains its poor acceptance.
