Ancient Rome is characterized by a large number of released slaves,which exists in the period of entire ancient Rome.In the late Republic and the initial period of Empire,released slaves are active in various areas of society and have a significant impact on the development of Roman society.Generally speaking,the present study is divided into three parts:Part one presents that the released slaves come into being.After doing comparatively detailed expounding to the definition of released slaves,we analyze the reasons for setting slaves free from many aspects,such as economy,politics,military and the like.Following this,four ways of causing release are explored in details.In addition to this,the conditions for the release of slaves and obstacles are demonstrated.At last,we point out that the freedom of access to the redemption money,loyalty to country and slave owners are the conditions for the release of slaves.We also make a conclusion that the slave owner,the slave owner's motivation of releasing slaves,as well as the slaves ' age are all the obstacles of being set free.Part two attempts to deal with the development of the released slave class.This is mainly divided into three stages:First,during the period of the Republic of Rome,the released slaves develop steadily;Second,the class of released slaves grow quickly in the early period of Empire, which is mainly manifested in the sharp increase in its quantity and on the extensiveness of the social sphere;Third,latter half of the Empire is the period of the slave class' evolvement,during which,released slaves are being transformed into peasants.Part three is mainly intended to explain the slaves' position and effect.Firstly,the position of released slaves in Rome is analyzed from three aspects--the economy,politics and social rules. Then the slaves' effect on the development of ancient Rome and the social morphology evolution are respectively explained. |
