Based on the precursors' academic achievements and the field work by myself, I specifically analyzed and compared the performance of oboe in Western and suona horn in China. I employed music, ethnomusicology, musical esthetics and sociology and method of comparing. I proposed several new opinions on the performance of oboe and suona horn in the thesis. The thesis can be divided into five parts:In the introduction part, I introduced the significance of the topic, and the identification of research objectives and current overall research as well as research methods. While both the oboe and suona horn had the same sound production principle and the similar original, all that was the initial motive of the thesis. Now it was great different in the appearance of the oboe and suona horn, the research aim of the thesis was to find out the factors via my analysis, therefore I recognized the difference of music culture in China and the Western from a new perspective. Although many researchers had deeply studied the two instruments respectively, I had some extent of originality that it didn' t get an agreed conclusion when comparing oboe and suona horn in the precursors' research achievements. In the first chapter I respectively concluded the overview history of the orchestrated art performance both in China and western as well as introducing the music culture environments of oboe and suona horn in different eras. Then I stated the time and developing tendency when suona horn and tartar pipe' s introduction into China. At last section, I concluded the original and development of oboe. That was the initial comparison between oboe and suona horn periodically. The second part was the main part in the thesis. In the chapter, I respectively compared the performance skill of oboe and suona horn. The first section , from the material factor ,I stipulated such factors: framework, shape, the mode of band and the staff taking. In the second section I compared the culture background of oboe and suona horn, mainly including the usage of both in the folkway activities, sacrifice activities and religious activities, which revealed the inseparable relationship between suona horn and the folkway activities, and I pointed out the relationship had confined the development of suona horn and the importance of aesthetic function in oboe music. In the third section I stated the art features of oboe and suona horn, including musical theme, scale system, performing skill, to certify the relationship of oboe and suona horn.In the third chapter I discussed the mutual influence and improvement of oboe and suona horn, including the appearance of adding-key suona horn and development tendency, and the involvement of suona horn in modern oboe music such as the similarity of trick tongue, double tongue and re-circled breathe. The last part was a conclusion to the thesis ,I thought the most important factor making the oboe and suona horn different was that the different music function when the performers using them ,suona horn displayed its practical function , which made it tightly tied with folkway activities, while the oboe displayed esthetic function to make the musicitself fast improve.
