The cultural differences between the Sorth and the North brings about a great deal of inspiration in his work. And the tension between agricultural civilization and industrial civilization haunts Williams throughout his life. The Glass Menagerie,A Streetcar Named Desire and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof are three representatives on this theme. Based on the analysis and the contrast of main characters in each play, the thesis expound and prove multi-leveled reasons which lead to the tragical destination of the characters in these three plays from four different aspects: the transition of the sense of value, social culture, family and the life outlook of these main figures in the play. Then it further analyzes the formative process of these reasons and in which way these reasons influences lives of these characters. The study of these reasons which lead to the tragical destination of the characters reveal the complexity and diversity of human beings'personality, emotion and behavior. The problems which are presented by Tennessee in his three tragedies universally exist in the lives of human beings. So the study of these problems will contribute to searching for the essence of existence and the subsistent predicaments, reminding us of facing up to these crises and giving more importance to them. | | Keywords/Search Tags: | Tennessee Williams, tragedy, reason, sense of value, society, family | PDF Full Text Request | Related items |
