The Chinese modern essay which originated in the Youth magazine is a new type of literature emerged after the May Fourth New Literature Movement. Impressions Record is a column in the Youth magazine that is dedicated to publish essays inspired by random thoughts, a rudiment form of Chinese modern essay. For that reason, Impressions Record would surely have influenced the creation of the style of modern essays. This paper will discuss how and in what way this influence had been made.This paper made a textual research on the intension of the conception of Chinese ancient essays in a historical way and showed through historical data how this intension changed from random thoughts to modern essays in the literary debate of 1930s. The Impressions Record column in the Youth magazine initiated a new type of essays of random thoughts, which is different from the ancient ones mainly in the former's intense tint of enlightenment in thoughts and its form which is notable for its initiative combination of explanation and thoughts. This new form of essay had laid the foundation for modern essay both in thoughts and in forms while the critical character of Impressions Record had enabled modern essays with functions of critics of society, creating a new field of critics in the complicated historic contentions of human being. However, due to its literary deficiency, it was too easy to fall into a tool of political struggle.
