On The Reconstruction Of The Of Harigaya If Tess Translation Of Local Color

Zhang Guruo is famous for the rendition of The Return of the Native, Tess of the D'Urberilles and Jude the Obscure, among which, the translated Chinese version of Tess of the D'Urberille is mostly loved by the readers and deeply appreciated by scholars. In this version, Zhang Guruo mainly uses the strategies of adopting four-character phrases, dialect-for-dialect translation and translating with annotations, which are studied by scholars and cause many controversies, but these studies ignore the main function of all these strategies, namely, representing the strong country color of the original novel. Therefore, this thesis will analyze how Zhang Guruo reconstructs the strong country color from the perspective of functional equivalence proposed by Eugene A. Nida, and explores why he attaches the importance to the highlight of the strong country color.Chapter one explores how Zhang Guruo reconstructs the"local color", which is mainly reflected by Wessex scenery and dialect. By using Chinese four-character phrases, this version reconstructs the beauty of Wessex's scenery, giving the target language receptor the similar inspiration, passion and aesthetic; By adopting Shandong dialect, this version highlights the country color and demonstrats the regional characteristic of people clearly.Chapter two analyzes how Zhang Guruo represents the folk culture of the original, which can be classified into two types: the folk culture which is similar with Chinese and the folk culture which is absent in china. Zhang Guruo uses the closest natural equivalence in Chinese and annotation respectively to represent the two types of folk culture. Due to the importance of annotation in Zhang Guruo's version, this chapter also analyzes other contents of Zhang Guruo's annotations in Tess of the D'Urberilles and the significance of them.Chapter three discusses the three reasons of highlighting the strong country color in Zhang Guruo's version: the similar views towards translation between Zhang Guruo and Nida, the strong"Agrestic Complex"in Zhang Guruo's mind and the corresponding poetics on novels between Chinese and English.
