China's early modernization lasted over one hundred years from 1840 to 1946.During this period, two developing opportunities appeared. However,China could not build an integrate and independent industry system. What caused this delay of modernization? This thesis has a profound discussion from the perspective of the destructive influence of Japanese war of aggression to China. The Revolution of 1911 divides China's early modernization period into two stages. The first stage from 1840 to 1911 is characterized by Qing dynasty's struggle to save its regime while the second one from 1912 to 1949 is the period during which Republic strived for the modernization.China's early modernization is extermal-oriented which centered on economic industrialization and extended to the fields of politics, ideology and social life.During this period,a traditional agriculture society was transforming to a modern industry one.Although China's early modernization started almost at the same time with Russian and Japan,it did not make remarkable progress.Instead it fell behind the two countries. The commencement of early modernization by Chinese officials is symbolized by Westernization Movement from 1860s to 1890s.Although lasting only over 30 years,it achieved a lot.It is the first one to center on military and economic industrialization and started the modernization on the fields such as military, economics, education, diplomacy and ideology. What's more, during this period an emerging bourgeoisie came into being. However, the outbreak of Sino-Japanese War of 1894 to 1895 failed Westernization Movement and broke Qing dynasty's dream of "strong demand" and "seeking the rich".It also held up the first development opportunity of China's early modernization. The second opportunity for the development of China's early modernization appeared in the "golden decade" from 1927 to 1937 before the outbreak of Japanese all-round war of aggression. During this period, national government took some measures to develop economics including the establishment of state monopoly capitalist economic system, carrying out currency reform and national construction exercise, putting emphasis on education and science and technology development, setting the New Testament. In addition, the society also brought up a group of talented modern industrialists.Modernization theory was becoming gradually clear and China's economy showed the sign of take-off.However,the anti-Japanese war cost China's enormous man of power, material resources and financials and led China's modernization to a failure, which caused another delay of China's early modernization. In a word, whenever China's early modernization made some progress, the Japancse aggressors would lose no time in launching aggressive wars and block the course of early modernization. This delayed China's early modernization once and again. The Japanese war of aggression was the primary external factor to cause the delay of China's early modernization.
