Expectation is the first opera works created by Arnold Schoenberg, a famous Austrian composer. It is also the first opera works that gives up the tonality and consonance thoroughly. By combining the analysis of musical technique and opera features ,the thesis has a special study on the opera Expectation.The thesis discusses the opera's creation background,script and music so as to inquire into the fundamental reasons that urge Arnold Schoenberg to change to the music style of Expressionism. From these analyses,we may make such conclusions: the opera structure, which is like stream of consciousness,and the association -free music structure presents women's disorderly emotion.The style of inner monologue and pitch-class sets-like motivation helps display women's hidden inner world. Dream-like alternation between time and place ,as well as functional rhythm, performs punctual reversible time and place .The abstract character portrayal and the non-conventional timbre manifests distorted women images .Through serious writing ,the writer tries to appraise the status and significance of the opera Expectation in the opera history,...
