| This thesis attempts to analyze the relationship between literature prizes and the development of literature through a study of major literature prizes in Italy and also put forward the research method of studying the development of literature through the evaluation system of literature prizes. The earliest literature prize mentioned in this thesis was established in 1926, so the context of discussion is from the 1920s onward, which coincides with the commonly acknowledged starting point of contemporary Italian literature.This thesis studies five of the most influential literature prizes, i.e. Premio Bagutta, Premio Viareggio-Repaci, Premio Strega, Premio Bancarella e Premio Campiello , coordinate historical data on the establishment and development of literature prizes in Italy and analyze the relationship between literature prizes and the development of literature on two levels: 1. literature prizes may reflect the trend of literature development objectively; 2. literature prizes may positively influence and promote the development of literature. However, the thesis also point out that many factors might limit the literature prizes' reflection and influence of on the development of literature.Through analysis, this thesis establishes that the research method of studying contemporary Italian culture is reliable and effective. This method could also be applied in the research of local literature and other forms of art, in which lies the research objective and meaning of this thesis. |
