Gustave Moreau (1826--1898), French symbolismic painter, who was famous for paintings of ancient mythology and religion. Varies of females repeatedly appear in his works are fairly notable. Interpretations overseas and domestic are commonly skin-deep and simple, and at the same time domestic scholars merely touch Salome when they talk about these females, which is not enough for understanding his female paintings. This article reveals ideas in his works and pays much attention to its social influence via deep-in study on the figures of Salome, Galatea and Sappho with the methods of sociology and iconography. |
