The highest artistic mood of Chinese landscape painting lies in "distance", with depicting "serene mood in a distant way" as its essential goal, it cannot reappear the nature, but it can attract people to the nature.Chinese landscape painting concentrates on "viewing from the great to the small" and scanning a thousand miles in a single glimpse, it treats space as an organically integrated life mood in a "seemingly separated but combined" way.The "distance" in the inner part, focuses on the spiritually immunity to fame and wealth. Best explained by Ou Yangxiu, the ancient poet, "Gloomy scene and immunity to fame and wealth, is the mood that's hardest to be painted, even the painter has seized the mood, the viewer may not understand it. Thus slowly flying and moving objects are easily expressed for their shadow artistic mood, while leisure and tranquility, interests in distance are hard to be reproduced for their deep meaning." Gloomy scene and immunity to fame and wealth, leisure and tranquility is the magnanimity and atmosphere of artistic character. This paper probes deeply into the truth from the original meaning of "distance", analyzes the artistic taste of "Distance Viewing" towards mingling between heart and mood brought by "There Distance", which was raised by Guo Xi in Song Dynasty, and explains the artistic mood resulted from the "Self-out mood" in Song Dynasty landscape painting and cultivation of outer-mood beauty promoted by Han Zhuo's "Three Distance"; depiction of "distance" in Chinese landscape painting after Yuan Dynasty; and therefore comes to the conclusion that modern people, with their self-cultivation in poetry, should understand the artistic mood of "distance" , the far-reaching effects that "distance" has on contemporary landscape painting, and how to embody "distance" in the creation of contemporary landscape painting, the effects of contemporary diversified culture towards "distance", as well as the profound significance of "distance" in future creation of landscape painting. This paper attempts to touch the soul of landscape painting -- the esthetic feature of "distance" in artistic mood, through an in-depth analysis on the artistic mood of distance in Chinese landscape painting, tracing to the source, and copious quotation from many references.
