H.G. Wells was the famous novelist and social activist of Britain in the late 19th century and early 20th century. Wells is regarded as the founder of science fiction in Britain and the forefather of the modern science fiction in the world. He was even called'Shakespeare of science fiction'.The thesis is intended to have an overall exploration both into the short stories and novels of Wells'from the composition pattern and artistic techniques, with the emphasis on his pioneer work and development of science fiction, and his great endeavor and devotion to this style of literature as well.Wells created a science fiction pattern integrating artistic fantasy, warning of modern science and the criticism on the society. Wells, out of his great talent in fantastic imagination, has opened up a new way for the science fiction writing by employing the descriptions of spectacular scenes and settings, and figuring a number of classic characters in his stories. In his works, he writes about the hopes as well as the dangers of wrack and ruin, implying the warning to human beings. His science fictions bear much social value since his objective criticism and deep thought on the society are embodied in his works of science fiction. As for the artistic techniques, Wells showed his fertility in making use of myths and imagery to enrich his science fiction, his exploiting capacity in applying the Gothic way of story writing to create a new style for science fiction; his creative use of ambivalence as a leitmotif and the ambiguous ends; his strategic use of different description and the intricate conceiving and dramatic plot.
