Discussion On The Subject Of The Catcher In The Rye And Narrative Art

The progress of science and technology and development of productive forces don't solve the problem existed in the human being's spirit field after the Second World War .The situation of the Cold War and that government control people's thoughts aggravate the hypocritical,degeneration,unfeeling of the American society , which deepens the people and society's alienation degree .As the first novel that made Jerome David Salinger famous and also became his representative work ,The catcher in the Rye , the only full-length novel of Jerome David Salinger's, which was published in 1951 , was called"Modern Classics"of American Literature in 20th. The novel creates a typical character——a young rebel against the society in literature history called Holden , reveals his inner world : his suffering greatly from the spiritual depression and his being eager to the true feeling and childishness and emerges the spirit character of this generation .From these, we can see the alienation of all kinds of the American society and also can understand that the author rebel the human nature alienation and long to the coming back of human nature . The novel breaks through the traditional narrative technique. It sets a young rebel Holden as a story teller, uses the first person to clear up the word power and reconstruction the main current of ideology;The novel overturns traditional plot model and splits up oppressive speech . It uses"vulgar"speech to melt the border between exquisite literature and popular literature. From the special visual angle of the youth who is nearly a person suffering from schizophrenia , the author broke the speech of the power and the traditional esthetics ideas, meanwhile ,he used"No Word"of the narration of non-personification to place the truth and the last meaning . The author abandoned the consoling and educating function of Literature and presented a true existence in a world which lost its value. Because of these elements, the novel has a distinct theme . The paper is divided to two parts .Using the analysis method of the society history to explore the work's theme , the first chapter specifically focus on the alienation world,Holden's rebellion and Jerome David Salinger's society background . The second chapter analyzes the work's narrative construction,narrative stratagem,narrative style with the narrative measures . the themes of anti-alienation and anti-essential culture that the novel reveals obtain the perfection and unifying with the narrative pattern which dispels the elegance,reconstruct the center and breaks the old copybook .
