The research on Chinese philosophical spirit can not only be carried out at the substantial level, but also should focus on the vigor and verve of Chinese philosophy. Considering about the philosophical spirit of Chuang Tzu in ancient China, this article focuses on the spirit behind his theory of"xiaoyao"and"qiwu", rather than analyzing the theories themselves. While the theory of"qiwu"which encourages the integration of environment and people is the foundation of Chuang Tzu's philosophy, the theory of"xiaoyao"which describes that a huge bird is free to fly up wherever he wants is definitely the philosophical spirit. Both theories constitute Chuang Tzu's philosophy, whose spirit believes that we are interacting with the spirit, not with the trivial world. Due to the academic support of Tao, Chuang Tzu was able to take Tao as the final destination when observing objects and human beings. Searching for Tao, which is the Chinese philosophical spirit, affected Chuang Tzu as well as lots of other Chinese philosophers who lived in ages before Qin dynasty. The comparison of Chuang Tzu and Mencius helps us to figure out more about the philosophical spirit and to deepen our understanding of the traditional culture.
