The majority of graduates from music colleges, department of music education will teach music in primary or secondary school. In this case, they shall be capable of teaching fundamental music knowledge and skills. With the development and reformation of music education in China, the courses those are more practical are becoming more and more important. Among them, piano accompaniment is the most popular one. In recent years, more and more teaching materials on piano accompaniment are published, but at same time, very few researches regarding to its current teaching-status had been done.In this paper, the piano accompaniment teaching in college music education department was studied; several accompaniment teachers from Tian Jin Conservatory of Music (TJCM) and 10 graduated students who are teaching in primary or secondary schools were interviewed; at mean time, a survey was carried out among year 2, year 3 and year 4 students in TJCM. It was found that most teachers and students had realized the importance of the extemporary accompaniment, and more reformation in this area had been carried out. But there are still some problems in theories, course arrangement, teaching methods, and efficiency of learning. Some advice were given with respect to the above problems. In theory, the college should emphasize the extemporary accompaniment and put it as same important as piano and vocality courses. In course arrangements, increasing in time for extemporary accompaniment and its relationship with other courses should be considered. In teaching methods, the completeness of the course contents and the practicability of the teaching methods should be noticed. Also, some learning advice based on author's learning experience was given: correct attitude, good practice after school, improvement in three areas, and good study habits. With pilot studies in this paper, I hope more and more people will pay attention to the music education department, and piano extemporary accompaniments, so that more research will be carried out in this area.
