William Lockhart (1811-1896) , a British medical missionary who came to China before the Opium War, was appointed a medical missionary by the London Missionary Society in 1838. He had been engaged in medical mission for twenty years in China. In the Opium War, he set up a hospital in Chusan. In 1844, he also established a hospital in Shanghai. He left Shanghai and returned to England by the end of 1857. In 1861; he returned to China again and took activities for three years in Peking.Medical mission is an important way to carry on the religious dissemination by the protestant missionaries in China. The medical missionary is an important community of missionaries coming to China. The primary coverage is to show modern protestant' s medical mission in China through William Lockhart' s missionary work in China. The article is mainly divided into three parts. First, it introduced the background and the preliminary development of the missionary work in China. Second, it introduced Lockhart' s missionary work in China and political activities. Finally, it introduced Lockhart' s attitude on the Chinese medicine and Chinese society. Taking in the medical mission in the meantime, he also observed Chinese society. He enjoyed considerable fame among the early medical missionaries.
