Due to the changes of economy and polity of China in the early twentieth century, Chinese cultures and arts, especially Chinese painting, have also started to change. One of the typical changes is the huge controversies on traditions versus revolutions resulted from how Chinese painting will develop. This article attempts to illustrate the traits of the revolutionary Chinese paintings versus traditional Chinese paintings in form 1920s to 1940s. The attempts include the analyses the some artists from extrinsic to intrinsic exploring and the progress of restoration towards the traditions to explain the traits of the restorations and the relationship between restoration and revolution. The restoration in this article is not simply a reactionary move, but it is the re-acknowledgement and re-development under the western background. Meanwhile, the revolutionary power also lets us see the traditions form a new angle. This restoration does not inherit the finest part of the traditions but also includes the care of the realistic life and the new feelings. This is how the Chinese paintings regain the new development and life.
