Yan Yumin was not a renowned writer at his time, but he should not be neglected either. His works was contributive to Chinese modern literature in several ways, though never awarded with a decent position he should have deserved. I think an in-depth and comprehensive research on his works is by all means necessary if we are to fully understand and summarize the historic contributions of Chinese modern literature, especially of those literature works emerged after Wusi Movement. The thesis here in would take a synthetic approach of comparison both vertical and horizontal to analyze and evaluate his works, that is, to cast his works against the setting of 1920s' grand literal creation, as well as against the circumstance of his own creation during the 1920s, while drawing a contrast between his thoughts changes in that decade.Yan's works of 1920s mainly comprise of short novels, poems, essays, fables and fairy tales, of which, short novels and poems are the two brightest pearls. His novels further break down to two kinds by their subjects for description: those for rural youths and those for petty highbrows. Poems like Three Poems and Living Tomb and essays like Reading Notes in Solitude and Recollecting Fortitude spell their fascination. From a comprehensive perspective, Yan's works of earlier 1920s unfold gentle, dilute and obscure beauty, a shade of melancholy and much of humanitarian streaks of Love and Beauty, while works of later 1920s seem to have developed an inclination for masculine and fighting.Yan was truly versatile in terms of literature. His contribution to literal world was manifold but what is of more significance is his heart of benevolence and love which thread through all his works.
