The Treatise on Friendship is the study object of this paper, which is the first book on ethic wrote in Chinese by the western missionary Matteo Ricci in late Ming Dynasty, who is the first missionary successfully entered the upland of China. This paper will research the book The Treatise on Friendship on three aspects:the background of writing, the spread and influence, and the significance on Chinese and Western communication on culture. As soon as the book was finished in Nanchang, it spred widely among the literati in late Ming Dynasty. It is because the attention to the friendship of the literati in late Ming Dynasty on one hand, and Matteo Ricci consciously cater to the taste of Chinese in the book on the other. The spread and influence of The Treatise on Friendship in late Ming Dynasty represents the first resonance in the field of ethic on Chinese and Western communication on culture.And the study of the communication and interaction between Matteo Ricci and the literati in late Ming Dynasty will also make great sense to present-day Chinese and Western communication on culture.
