William Theodore de Bary is an important scholar who has madespecial contributions to Confucianism study in Western, and he has paidmuch attention to Wang Yang-ming, which interior scholars have ignored.The research is mainly based on The Liberal Tradition in China andLearning for One's Self, and several Central ideas would be put in order.The image of Wang Yang-ming in de Bary's works would be described as aHeir to Tradition of the Way, a Capable person of Learning for one's selfand a Moral teacher. Then this article would try to reveal the internalcontact between the three and point out that they are all unified by the Way,among these images is the active and renewal individual. Finally, there aresome preliminary analysis on the method and contents of de Bary'sresearch, also some scholar's comments and some difficulties in across-cultural study. The author believes that the significance would bemanifested in the dialogue, and then in the process of dealing with theseproblems, we might make a further development on the communicationbetween Chinese and Western cultures and the Confucianism study.
