Modern Chinese "the More X The More Y" Format Research

This paper mainly studies the Chinese constmcfion"yue X yue Y"from both synchronic and diachronic point of view, and tries to explain the expression and internal law of the construction.Chapter One, review the studies on the construction.Chapter Two and Three, discuss the arrangement of "yue X" and "yue Y" respectively from Syntax and Semantic aspects. Several reiterative"Yue"and its syntax function. The construction "yueXyue Y" means "two or more behaviors, factors or characters, one is independent and the other is dependent", that is, the latter changes with the changes of the former. It requires every word which enters the construction should have the nature of [+changeability] and [+dynamics].The meaning of the construction is not simply the combination of each word; it is more than the combination of each word. The function of the construction couldn't be ratiocinated by conversation. The marked construction is bigger than the word. What's more, the information in "yue X" is more than that in "yue Y". The fact is, as we put forward a troth, it is suggesting an according consequence.Chapter Four, discuss the variants of the construction, including "yue lai yue Y"and "yue shi X yue shi Y". "yue lai yue Y" comes from the construction "yue shi X yue shi Y" with unique characteristic, "time" is its conditional expression. For the construction of "yue shi X yue shiY", we discuss it in two aspects, the construction to emphasize the components after "yue", and the construction in which" shi "is a judging word.In Chapter Five, review the origin of"yue", and the relative adverbs, which played the similar role as "yue Xyue Y", hence, we can give a reasonable explanation to the construction.The conclusion, sum up the whole paper, and points out the deficiencies.
