Functional Analysis Of Russian Modal Verbs

For human beings, language is the important communication tool, the major method for transferring information and exchanging emotion. It has the function of expressing meaning and emotions. As well as transferring information of objective world, languages can also be used to express one's own attitude towards the uttered content. Subjective modality is the feature of each sentence. Russian modal words, used to express the attitudes, are active in both spoken and written communication, which is one of the most important methods for expressing subjective modal emotion. Modal word is an unchangeable word. Although not played as the sentence element, the modal word exerts active and unique effect in communication. Nowadays, most of the study on modal word concentrates on the source, classification and syntactical function, however, the study on semantic and pragmatic functions is not too much. On the basis that modal word is a special word class, this paper analyzes its semantic and pragmatic functions.This paper is divides into four parts:The first part states the issue of grammatical orientation of modal word. On the basis of the three standards for partitioning Russian word classes, it places modal word as a special word class and analyzes its morphological, semantic and syntactic features.The second part discusses the semantic function of modal word. In this part, it first analyzes the subjective modal meaning,then it makes the analysis on the semantic function from the perspective of cognition, emotion and intent.The third part focuses on the pragmatic function of modal word. Based on the relevance theory and discourse marker theory, this part analyzes the pragmatic function from the angle of influencing context effect, serving as the discourse marker method and adjusting discourse.The fourth part is the conclusion part. It concludes the whole paper.It can be concluded that Russian modal word has great effect in communication. It can reflect the cognitive factors, emotional factors and intent factors of the speakers, help speakers express themselves more accurate and appropriately, at the same time, guide the hearers to understand the discourse correctly. In the process of communication, adopting modal word appropriately, speakers can express themselves more decent and polite, the hearers can understand more accurate. Hence, it facilitates the thought communication, emotion exchange and promotes the establishment of better personal relationships.
