| Prior to the modern times, the farming population of China, due to the influence of small peasent's economy and their inseparable relationship with the soil, seldom left the country. Since the entry into the modern times, however, the population, given the impact of foreign capitalism, the unique status quo of the time and the onslaught of natural disasters and man-caused calamities, left their homeland in flocks to seek survival elsewhere. The 1920s and 30s turned out to be an important period for the farmers to leave their soil. The departure of the farmers is a prominent social problem, bearing the distinct marks of the time. By probing into the farmers of Jiangsu province leaving their land, the present research is expected to reflect the rural and urban social-and-economic situations of that time and, more importantly, the influence of the phenomenon on both the country and city, so that the in-depth interaction between farmers, city and countryside can be revealed. The exploration, besides, bears great modern significance. |
