The use of"light"takes very important place in oil painting. For the artist, the showing of"light"is not only the measure to reappear objective world, but also the key to emphasize topic and dominate picture. Meanwhile it is art language to organize the picture form and express subjective feeling. This essay penetrates into implication from the drawing and form. Through the demonstration of this essay to quest for the special function and significance of"light"in art of the canvas, it reminds us of conveying atmosphere to express feelings through the right showing of"light"in painting to make the product's artistic conception promoted and then reaching to higher level.The first part of the essay demonstrates the function of"light"in oil painting. This part begins from the representation of"light"in the western and the showing of"light"in the western religion art."light"can be shown sufficiently in western realistically oil painting because of the religion conception and art in western which play the important role to the development of the oil painting. In the long-term practice of painting about religion theme, western painting accumulated rich technical experiences and the technology of manifest the scene in various lights had became completely. The various forms of"light"showing in painting, such as collective light, scatter light, backlighting, play different roles to romance the atmosphere of a picture.The second part illustrates"light"reform from the Neoclassicism to the Impressionistic. In this period, with the development of science"light"was practiced in the picture, which made the art method colorful and the thought appearing and the character variously. In Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Realism period, being the cognitive limited to"light", the oil painting still inherited the traditional form. However, in Impressionism, because artists made a great progress in the light and color and then learned the closing relationship between the light and color, as a result artists concentrated on the transform of the light and color and so reformed the traditional form. In Post-Impressionism,"light"added subjective feeling to pay more attention to the showing of form, so the nature declined in the oil painting. This part also analyzes the certain artist and manifests that different artists have different ideas about"light". And taking advantage of"light"conveys the attitude about life and humanism feelings, so people can get more about their special art styles.The third part explains the importance of"light"in oil painting product through the special status of"light", the special significance to figure shape and the analysis of emotion expressing. Emphasizing study and manifesting nature oil painting is vital to the use and showing of"light"."Light"is the necessary media to attain real feelings. That is to say,"light"is very important in the western oil painting art. Moreover the use of"light"is also necessary to shape real feeling. Otherwise artists can also use"light"to express their special emotion. And through observing and refining their life they enhance the influence of their art, meanwhile, certain"light"express certain spirit meanings. The use of"light"in picture usually becomes the art language through artists express their personal emotion and feelings.
