Liu Zongyuan's "Yuxi Shi Xu" is his representative work, whichclaims "foolishness is beauty". Its literature image "the beauty of the fool"is also a main aesthetic topic of Liu Zongyuan's aesthetic thought "writeto realize Tao". Former academicians tried to interprete it as "greatwisdom that appear to be foolishness", which in my opinion seems notquite to the point. This essay, with "the foolishness of fools" as its thesis, compares theconnotation of foolishness in Liu Zongyuan's works with that in Du Fuand Han Yu's, brings out the similarities while distinguishing thedifferences between them, and therefore affirms that the foolishness of LiuZongyuan's works is not an ironical literature image. Focusing on thederivation of fools, it compares the connotation of fools in Liu Zongyuan'spoems, odes and essays, and therefore concludes the aestheticcharacteristics of the fool's image in his works. Based on formeracademicians' research, it puts forward a new theory: Liu Zongyuan'sself-assumed fool in his "Yuxi Shi Xu", is a portrait of his tragic lifeexperiences. The "Bing Zhi Zun Fen" values contained in it, observedfrom the angle of reality, is a "Bu Zhui Si Shi" conduct in society whichcombines adamancy and flexibility; observed from the angle of aesthetics,is a "Yuzhe Ziru" self-transcending sentiment inspired by beautifullandscape. By investigating relevant research, it has found out thederivation reference of the fool's image of Liu Zongyuan's works in TheBook of Songs, as well as the coincidence relation between the literatureimage of Kun symbol in The Book of Changes and the fool's image in LiuZongyuan's works. Thus, it has also sought out a literary evidence of MinSheng Ode's time of composition from the studies of The Book ofChanges. By comparing materials on the fool's image and "the Tao of DaZhong" in Liu Zongyuan's poems and essays, it puts forward the solemnand stirring characteristic of Liu Zongyuan's tragic life experiences andrelevant literary clues of his "backbone spirit".
