In the late Qing dynasty, a group of children got to America and studied there for several years, hoping to learn foreign advanced technology to make out country strong and our people rich. Although most of them were sent back halfway, the foreign advanced technology, the democratic and free thoughts and the good character they formed abroad had already made them become modern skilled officers and workers. They were quite different from the traditional officers and students and became the important forces to start China' early modernization because of their advanced thoughts and preeminent ability. After they returned, although they were excluded in the traditional sociaty, they endured humiliation and worked hard to make great contributions in defferent areas to the development of China' modernization. Most of them became the first technological experts who contributed a lot to the development of the modernization of mine, transportation and communication. Some of them became the new-styleofficers who helped to change China' political system, from traditional one towards democracy, freedom and legal system. What' s more, they set a good example of studing abroad and encouraged more and more students to follow them. This promoted the reform and development of China' educational system. The changes of the mind and the training of new-style skilled workers therefor greatly improved China' social modernization.According to the contributions of The First Hundred to the development of China ' economic , political and educational modernization, the dissertation demonstrated that they were the propellents to start China' modernization. Their example proved that the motive power of the social modernization is to realize the people' modernization, and also proved the truth of historical materalism which insists that history is the progress of the development of the people and their ability.
