This thesis mainly employs the method of influence study to make textual analysis of some selected works by several outstanding Chinese military novel writers in the 1980s, to study the relationship between these military novels and foreign literature, and to summarize the major sources of influence and their characteristics. The thesis consists of three parts: the introduction, the main body and the conclusion. The introduction determines the object of study, the content, the goal and the method, points out the practical significance of making such a topic research, and elaborates the general situation of military novel creation in the 1980s and the subjective changes of military novel writers. The main body of the thesis is divided into four chapters. Chapter One mainly analyzes four military novels, namely, Garlands at the Foot of the Mountain, She Tian Lang, Iron bed, The Lives They Left Behind, and points out that military novels created in that period are mainly influenced by USSR military literatureChapter Two mainly discusses three military novels, namely, Red Sorghum, Out of the Death Camp, and Ling Qi, in which we can trace foreign literature's influence on military novel creation in the mid-1980s and conclude that the reception of foreign literature had become mature gradually. Chapter Three mainly focuses on The Wannan Event. In the late 1980s, the literary creation of military novels declined gradually, but Li Ruqing's in-depth exploration of the tragic connotation of military novels showed that the connection between Chinese military novels and foreign culture still existed.Chapter Four discusses the characteristics of foreign literature's influence on Chinese military novel creation in the entire period of the 1980s, and concludes that the influence mainly comes from two sources: one is USSR, and the other is Europe and America. Under the influence of such foreign literature, military novel creation in the 1980s is characteristically different from those in the 1950s and 1960s.
