Chen Quan Creation

In the history of Chinese modern literature, the Zhanguo Ce Clique is a comprehensive cultural and academic school with bright national consciousness and German thought background,that was very famous in the rear area of China in 1940's. As an important member of the Zhanguo Ce Clique, Chen Quan, who owed various cultural statuses and great achievements in many fields, has special meaning in the history of Chinese modern literature and cultural. But he has not only been misunderstood by the literature history for a long time, but also lacks necessary research continuously. This dissertation studies Chen Quan's literature works all-sidedly and analyses his philosophy idea, literature concept and German thought background profoundly, on the foundation of systematically collecting and arranging the material of his life and works, in order to give Chen Quan a proper position and a complete literature figure in the modern literature history, to restore the true appearance of this badly-treated writer.This dissertation falls into three parts:Chapter 1 figures the Chen Quan research. To begin with the statement of Chen Quan research in the recently eighty years, analyzing its achievements and shortcomings, I find that lacking overall master of Chen Quan's works is the key problem in Chen Quan research. As a scholar and writer achieves both in Chinese and Western culture, Chen Quan's change in philosophy idea from Schopenhauer to Nietzsche and his unique literature concept have affected his writing profoundly. Chapter 2 is about the earlier stage of Chen Quan's writing. Chen Quan has been writing all his life, his literature works includes many types such as novel, poem, essay, review and drama. His works of earlier stage are mainly new poem and novel, the latter one had won the first fame for him in the New Literary Circles. Chen Quan's literature works have bright feature and describe the real life, so his spirit change from individualism to nationalism can be seem clearly in his five novels.Chapter 3 is about the later stage of Chen Quan's writing. The period of national literature is the most important part of his writing. In the background of anti-Japan war, he has showed his position on nationalism. He advocated Nietzsche's philosophy theory to restore national spirit, initiated the National Literature Movement to cultivate national consciousness. He also wrote a series of works including novel, poem and drama advocating the spirit of anti-Japan and save motherland. Especially his Wild Rose has gained great fame as well as fierce assaults. Chen Quan emphasized the utility of literature, at the same time, thought highly of its aesthetic nature. The obvious romantic style of his dramas came from German literature. His advocacy of the National Literature Movement was also enlightened by German Violent Movement.
