As the title shows, the focus of the dissertation is on the Passive Compensation Theory, a type of theory about artistic essence. Because the Passive Compensation Concept has not been shaped into a theoretic state, in the discussion the dissertation introduces ancient Chinese theatre as a main sample. This dissertation attempts to verify the existence of the Passive Compensation Concept through the academic analysis of the three kinds of happy ending and its ideality. On such basis it describes the fundamental features of the Passive Compensation Theory, the main cause of formation of the Passive Compensation Concept, its historical fate and etc. The author hopes that these foundational works can make valuable contributions to this research field.The text of the dissertation consists of the preface and five chapters. The preface mainly explains the title: On Passive Compensation Theory: a Study Taking Ancient Chinese Theatre as a Main Sample. ChapterⅠdiscusses the three kinds of happy ending which haunt ancient Chinese theatre. ChapterⅡdiscusses the ideality of the three kinds of happy ending. ChapterⅢdescribes the fundamental features of the Passive Compensation Theory. ChapterⅣdescribes the main cause of formation of the Passive Compensation Concept. ChapterⅤdescribes its historical fate.
