Literary Translation, The Characters And Context Dependencies

Yasunari Kawabata, the first Japanese Nobel Laureate in Literature, plays an important role in the Japanese literary world. The female figures in his works leave a deep impression by the traditional Japanese elegance accompanied by the oriental beauty. In his famous book Snow Country which cost him 13 years, the description of female shows its unique feature. The leading character Komako reveals a sentimental but tenacious geisha image struggling to survive. This thesis is trying to further reveal the research extent of Snow Country in China and to nail down the dependence relationship between the literary translation of Komako figure and the whole context, through the introduction of Komako figure by the Chinese scholars in the late 1970s and the problems in text translation of key vocabularies related to Komako figure.Started from the prolegomenon, this thesis introdues briefly the writing process of this book and the characters'relationship to unveil the source of the problem and to introduce the research structure as well as its practical significance. The body of this thesis chooses the 4 texts which have profound effects in the Chinese translation in Snow Country. Based on the comparison of all kinds of translations of the texts, questions will be raised to place the characters' research on the context so as to nail down the dependence relationship between the characters in literary translation and the context.There are three parts in the body. Part I: the understanding of Komako by Chinese scholars .The status quo of research in China of Komao in Snow Country will be identified first.Part II: getting down to real business: the relationship between literary translation and Komako.The dependence relationship between characters in literary translation and the context will be .Part III: the character features of Komako herself will be revealed by the description of Yasunari Kawabata's femininity and its influence on Komako the character.Part IV: the summary of Komako the character.at last, the author is trying to come to a comprehensive Komako image so as to give out a more concrete relationship between the figure and the context.The figure of Komako proves the excellent writing technique of the writer and the unique esthetic ideas of Japan. Therefore, the understanding of Komako the character should place more attention on the understanding the original book. As a result, when trying to translate this works, more stress should be placed on the whole character and try to do it in the whole context in order to avoid mistranslation.
