Since as early as the initial stage of the research on Chinese Grammar, the structure of "NP de VP" has aroused great attention from the grammarians. Up to now, however, the core of studies has mainly been placed on the analysis and discussions of its structures and functions as well as its nature, on which no authoritative conclusion has been reached yet.Motivated by the current research gaps, the present study made the attempts to explore the origination and evolution process of "NP de VP" and to probe the reason for its evolution by reliable first-handed corpus and accurate analysis of the materials.In the second chapter, which is the kernel of the current research, the author studied the application of "NP de VP" thoroughly from a historical perspective. Detailed description and analysis has been given to the structure of "NP de VP" appearing in the vernacular works in the literature history, dating from the period of Song Dynasty to the 1930s. By showing nine tables which provide specific information of "NP de VP" in number, structure and syntactic aspects, she tried to present the readers with a vivid image of its development and enlargment, from scarce to rich, simple to complex.Based on the previous parts, the author tried to identify the reasons for the evolution of "NP de VP" and to probe into the nominalization of two-syllable verbs in Chapter III. More concerns was distributed to the historical successive relationship between the "NP de VP" in contemporary Chinese and that in Classic Chinese as well as the acceleration of its development resulted from the New Culture Movement around the May 4^th Movement period, especially the influence from the large emergence of the translation of foreign works.For the further discussion part, this paper addressed the topic of the nature and structure of "NP de VP", which has always been a controversial issue among the grammarians. The viewpoint advocated in this thesis is that the "NP de VP" in contemporary Chinese is a direct successor to that in Classic Chinese. Similar with " Zhi" in Classic Chinese, "De" is also placed between the subject and the predicate of a sentence to avoid the sentence independence; "NP de VP" belongs to the noun category.Through solid foundational corpus study and historical exploration, the current research was conducted with the aim to present a detailed description and analysis of the origination and evolution of "NP de VP", as well as an overall understanding of its nature, and at the same time to provide information for further research and systematic studies of this issue.
