| Zhang Huai Guan is the greatest calligraphical theoretician in prosperous Tang Dynasty, leaving a numerous quantity of theatrical works. He inherited completely six dynasties' calligraphy thought (from Han to Wei), and carried on an overall and deep discussion to the various aspects of problems relating to calligraphy, put forward many new views: for example, The origins and development of calligraphy, its essence, its position in the social activities, creation regulations, calligraphy's skill theory, the appreciation and criticism of calligraphy etc. These treatises involve to many aspects of Chinese calligraphy theories, constructing a basic frame of ancient calligraphy theories. He is an important representative person in Tang Dynasty calligraphy culture.In order to learn the whole frame of Zhang's thought and to make a clear understanding of many important thoughts and views, this paper carries on an overall and particular investigation to Zhang's writings and theories and put forward explanations to the calligraphy theories in his writings. |
