Classical Utilitarian Ethical Thought

The Utilitarianism is divided into tow parts, the Classic Utilitarianism and the Modern Utilitarianism. The Classic Utilitarianism is represented by Bentham and Mill, and the Modern Utilitarianism includes the Action Utilitarianism and Standard Utilitarianism. The Classic Utilitarianism is an important period of the Utilitarianism. It collected the ethics thought, social system, and law system into one body, made its highest principle by " To Realize the Greatest Happiness of the Most Majority." Using this principle, they reformed the English sociaty thoroughly, leading to the brilliance of the rising period of the capitalism, and made the Utilitarianism permeate through all fields.The thesis employs the dialectical in the stand, view, and method to analyze and illustrate the Utilitarianism, the aim lies in reflecting its modern value, and sever the practice of our transforming society.The whole thesis is divided into three parts. The first part illustrates the meaning of the Classic Utilitarianism, and analyzes its produce conditions. The development of science provided the instruction on the thought; the development of the social economy and the reforming on the political relationship offered the social bases; its practical as well as critical theory feature decided its shooting up; and special national culture tradition gave it the culture base.The second part states the Classic Utilitarianism theory system in detail, combing the Benthem's and Mill's ethics thoughts, discussing Mill's inheriting, revising and developing, summing up the Classic Utilitarianism feature in the theory.The third part comments and analyzes the Classic Utilitarian ethics thought. Confirming its advantages on the theory ; meanwhile also pointing out its disadvantage ; Further discussing the moral practice sense of the Classic Utilitarian; Offering a thought that constructs the proper ethics model by comment and sublation. That is, setting up a proper ethics model of national characteristics.
