"Ending" is an essential component of a text. It is due to its presence that the entire meaning of a text can be eventually interpreted. The same goes for fairy tales. However, fairy tale endings take on their unique features because of their own characteristics and the arrangements made by the "implied reader". The present thesis attempts to explore fairy tale endings from the perspective of both "readerly" and "writerly".The introduction section explains the reason for choosing this topic and interprets the denotation of fairy tale texts and the segmentation of endings.The first section of the thesis defines the notion of "readerly text" and "writerly text" and makes a further theoretical interpretation from the perspective of "reader reception": one is from "reader expectation", the other is from the uncertainty of a text.Through the analysis, it is known that "readerly ending" is the text that is consumed passively by readers. It tries to avoid the gaps that may exist in the text and does its best to cater for readers' expectations; However, "writerly text" is filled with uncertainty, thus it makes readers actively participate in the process for generating the textual meaning. It is a text that frustrates readers' expectations.The second section of the thesis analyzes "readerly ending" and "writerly ending" of fairy tales based on some typical instances. Through the analysis, it is found that the relationship between "readerly ending" and "writerly ending" is a matter of "relativity".
