Buddhism art, especially Buddhism frescoes, developed gradually with the introduction of Buddhism into China by Han Dynasty. Dunhuang frescoes were the most important and classical representation of profound significance. Dunhuang frescoes were art works generated by emerged Buddhism, the main part of Dunhuang art, the fusion of Chinese traditional art and mainland art, the most representative Buddhism art form of the long process in which Chinese art characteristics was formed, outlandish arts had been absorbed, the models of intercommunion between Chinese and Western painting. Dunhuang frescoes in Northern Wei Period were the major period of the fusion process. During this period, Dunhuang frescoes displayed gradually their unique art features, reinforced the national style by the combination of the Buddhism art from India, the western regions and the traditional Chinese art from the mainland. The paper believes that Dunhuang frescoes' artistic values are of rich scholastic contents including their topics, images and color. From the angle of art modeling , the paper unveils on uniqueness, artistic significance and historical status of art modeling of characters in Dunhuang frescoes in Northern Wei Period by introducing the features of compose, line and color, and systematical understanding of artistic features of characters.
