Northeast China's Foreign Immigrants 1911-1949

This article is based on the study of the foreign immigrants in Northeast China mainly coming from Japan, Russia and Korea during 1911 -1949.From 1904 to 1905, war broke out between Japan and Russia to occupy Northeast China and Korea, with Russia being defeated in the end. This war which was an action to divide colonies between imperial countries greatly impacted on international structure and relationship among China, Japan, Korea, and Russia. After the war, more and more foreign immigrants from Japan, Korea and Russia settled in Northeast China. And a lot of Japanese immigrants emigrated from this area after Japan was defeated in World War II. To study the foreign immigrants in Northeast China in modern history, this article is important in focusing on this period.In the author's opinion, foreigners immigrated to Northeast China mainly during 1911 to 1949.It was also the time China became part of the whole world system, when the world colonial system finally forming in early 20th century. Therefore, the immigrant process was to derive from economic globalization. Besides, it is clear that the governments designed and manipulated this immigrant movement. Then the fact is useful to find some middlescopic theory beyond dominant immigrant theory.The purpose of this article is through studying foreign immigrants in Northeast China to understand the immigrant backgrounds in this time, population distribution characteristic and its influence, etc. In regard to little research on Northeast China in this aspect, this study shows its significance both in theory and national policies. The historical forming process of immigrant group can picture how the Korea people form, understand the origin of culture diversity, and improve the ethno-population study. In the other hand, this research can provide a historical perspective on China's international policies with Japan, Korea and Russia, especially promoting the understanding and communicating on foreign immigrant problems such as illegal Korea immigrant.This research mainly took the method by literature analysis and historical comparison, with consulting the library, the archive office, county annals room and browsing electron information bank, collected the correlative domestic or foreign books and articles during the period 1911 - 1949, and carried on formal or informal interview with scholars or local people so as to exam whether the materials were real or credible.This article relies on ethnic theory and the international immigration theory and concerning method, with history and politics knowledge, to interpret immigrant movement background, process, and character, as well as its relation with politics, economic, and culture. At the same time, employing the comparative analysis method suitably to contrast three countries similarities and differences in facet of the immigrants' type andcharacter. This article believed that, the immigrants which from Japan, Korea and Russia were full of politics consider and government intervenes; it's also the result that Japan and Russia imperialism crazily colonizes the expansion in the beginning of 20th century. So the immigrant phenomenon was the production of big nation-building, resulting an unbalanced power relationship. Three countries' foreign immigrants in Northeast China still have a profound influence nowadays. But they have different patterns with which Japan and Russia voluntary and Korea non-voluntary or being forced.This article altogether divides into five chapters. The first chapter introduces the significance of the selected topic, correlation research and literature narration, theory and method and acquisition of information. The second chapter introduces the background of three foreign countries' immigrants. The third chapter introduced the process how foreign immigrants came to China under Japan's controlling. The final chapter is a further discussion that what government-leading immigrants' characteristic and influence on globalization are and how to deal with illegal immigrant problem, with the purpose in strengthening countries' communication.
