Seven words is an important religious material that many musicians dwell on, among which Schiitz(17th century, oratorio), Haydn(18th century, orchestral, later transcribed into 4 other versions), and Gubaidulina(Chamber music)'s works are the best well-known. The thesis takes Gubaidulina's work as the major object of study, in the first chapter the author makes a detailed analysis to each movements and a general summary of its techniques, i.e. the Core-note, and dramaturgy, etc., to discover how Gubaidulina realizes the symbolic significances of the geometric shape of the Cross, and the process of "Crucifixion" through her compositional means; the second chapter, using the comparative approach - juxtaposes Gubaidulina's Seven Words with Schutz and Haydn's works of same theme, to find the similarities and differences on the emotion-expression aspect; and in the third chapter, the author discussion the reasons why those differences exist. For Schutz, influenced by Martin Luther's religious ideas, he poured all his individual worship to God into calm, devout and abstained expression in his music. For Haydn, living in the age of enlightenment when science and reason started to challenge religion, his Seven words expresses the secular emotion of man. For Gubaidulina, a Tartan with Orthodox and other religious background, lived in the era where politics dominates all, her work expresses a unique sense of "positive" Judgment Day, which, influenced by Berdjajew, a Russian mysticist, represents the passion as a way to transcendence and eternity.
