As one kind of special language ingredient, independent-ingredient refers to words, phrases or sentences in a discourse which are not subject, predicate, object, attribute, adverbial or compliment, can stand at the beginning, in the middle and at the end of a sentence. This dissertation makes an exploration of this discourse phenomenon, trying to answer the following question: What is the function of independent-ingredient?We, first of all, introduced the definition, characteristics and function of discourse mark and independent-ingredient. We point out that the independent- ingredient is the discourse mark in Chinese, and where its function lies is not in the syntax, but in the pragmatics. After that, we gave an limitation to independent-ingredient in modern Chinese, and classified the typical member from independent-ingredient. In this foundation we proposed the main function of independent-ingredient was making tne coherent relation explicit; then, we discusses its function from following three aspects: (1) discourse organization function. Discourses, no matter written or spoken, are not pieces together with its various units. There are always some implicitly intended semantic relations between these discourse units. One of independent-ingredient's function is to make the implicit coherent relation explicit; (2) interpersonal discussion function. Discourses always occur between certain persons. Independent-ingredient can not only indicate the speaker's or the writer's manner, but also construct the relation between the speakers/writers and listeners/readers, adjust relationship during communication, which is essential for successful communication; (3) context restrict function. Discourses happen and continue in a certain context. With independent-ingredient, the speakers/writers construct the context, which tallis their purports, while the listeners/readers seek the relevance between discourses and context, and assurance the intention of the speakers/writers to the greatest degree.
