| The formation of the 1st National Art Exhibition during the Republic of China had a close relationship with the Western Salon, Japanese Exhibitions of Art Department and of Imperial Academy. At the turn of the Republic of China, the overseas Chinese students returened to the motherland with advanced technologies, as well as the foreign art. The art exhibition was admired by returned art-majors. On many occasions they made suggestions to the authority that art exhibition should be held. They set up private art academies and held sole exhibitions... Cai Yuan pei's thought-replacing religions with aesthetical education, had attracted a number of people with lofty ideals to participate in the education of art. In 1929 when the situation of politics, economics, and culture was getting better, the 1st National Art Exhibition got an opportunity to be held in Shanghai. At that time, however, the regular exhibition of art was impossible in a country suffering the social unrest and the increasing financial deficit. With the unpredictable changes of the war situation, the national art exhibitions had been turned into the authority's vehicle for propaganda from the education of art.Started from the cause of the National Art Exhibition, this study, with firsthand materials, elaborates the time, venue, people involved in the national exhibitions during the Republic of China, in hope of truly manifesting the national exhibitions and offering some detailed materials for scholars interested in the research of the art in the Republic of China. |
