Church Shanghai Xujiahui District (1608-1949)

This dissertation is the history of Xujiahui, a Catholic community in Shanghai, from three perspectives. The first part is the general situation of this community, Xujiahui become the Vatican in the Fast East in the modern and recent times. Not until the end of Ming dynasty, did it become renowned. People knew about Xujiahui because Xu Guangqi buried there. In the 18th centry, Qing court wasn't permitted until the Catholic was advocated according to the unfair agreements in the mid 19th century.And xujiahui again become the gathering base of the General base of Jesus in China.After that, around Xu Guangqi's tomb, tokens of the cultures at home and abroad have been established such as the General Courtyard of the Society of Jesus, Xujiahui middle school, Tushanwan Orphanage and the printing house, the museum of Natural History, Observatory of Xujiahui, and some educational institions such as Aurora College. All in all, the New Jesus does their best to establish such culture enterprise and this area become the largest center of western culture within decade.From an ordinary village in Shanghai's suburb in Ming Dynasty, xujiahui become a more and more important space center of the culture between the east and west in modern history. No matter the movement of west culture influencing the east at the Ming Dynasty or large scaled exchanges and conflicts between the modern west and east cultures, both have deeply affected the history of Xujiahui. As the Latin Area in Shanghai, Xujiahui was the community with the strongest cultural atmosphere in the history of Modern Shanghai. It is an important cradle of modern culture in Shanghai, and even in China at large before 1949.This article mainly analyses about the relation between Xujiahui and the New Jesus.While tring hard to unfold the historical picture of xujiahui, I also attempt to make a reflection on the way of a religionary community.Chapter thress is the stress of catholic life in xujiahui and introduces their effort between the east and west cultures. This chapter describes the outline of xujiahui: the Latin Area in Shanghai.Base on the analysis on xujiahui, a Catholic community in Shanghai, nowadays we should protect the divsrsity of culture in xujiahui.
