Huangzi is the pioneer of Chinese modern music. During his stay in predecessor of Shanghai conservatory of Music in the 1930s, Huangzi exerted his utmost effort to music, with all his heart and soul, and made indelible contribution to both modern Chinese music and music educational undertakings. In the field of music composition, he also left a large number of immortal works, of which solos played a very important part.This article takes Huangzi' s solos as research field and makes exploration of the solo' s artistic features, on the basis of the analyses of the following four aspects-Huangzi' s path to music and art, his thoughts about the composition of songs, the artistic features of his songs, and the exploration and classification of the essential of singing and classification.Huangzi' s works were created during the years from 1930 to 1938, a period when Chinese nation was faced with domestic trouble and foreign invasion, and was in an abyss of suffering. Due to the specific background and feeling of the time, Huangzi' s solos demonstrated inevitably the distinct style of the time.Huangzi' s solos express his creative thoughts, life-backed aesthetic pursuit and persistent patriotic feeling. The theme of his solos not merely keeps the quintessence of Chinese music and culture; it absorbs and adopts the techniques of western music as well. As a result, it has the elegance of highbrow art and literature as well as the excitement and indignation of the time theme. As for the technique of composition, it is delicate and vivid, implicate and beautiful.Huangzi is a versatile composer, music theoretician and music educationist in modern Chinese music history. His brief artistic career plus excellent personality is itself an exquisite solo.
